MARVIN BELL was born in New York City, and was raised in Center Moriches on rural Long Island. His early studies included music, photography, pottery and journalism. He has taught at Goddard College, and the Universities of Hawaii, Iowa, and Washington. Of his thirteen published books (two written with William Stafford) his most recent are The Book of the Dead Man (poems) and A Marvin Bell Reader (poems, journals, memoirs, essays). He lives with his wife Dorothy in Iowa City and in Port Townsend, Washington.
