Antônio de Castro Alves Antônio
de Castro Alves, the great Brazilian poet and abolitionist, died in
1871 at the age of 24. "Os Anjos da Meia Noite" is from his
last book, Espumas Flutuantes (Drifting Froth), which
the author called "a fantastic prism of fate or rapture" and
"a weird splitting of the pulse of ruin." His complete works
have not been translated into English.
