Szymon Zimorowic (1608-1629)

Szymon Zimorowic (1608 -1629) is one of the lesser known poets of the Polish Baroque, known solely for his long poem cycle of love songs and dances called Roxolanki or The Ukrainian Girls, from which this poem is taken. Milosz, in his History of Polish Literature, writes: Roxolanki opens…love poems recited by young girls and boys who step forward one at a time as if participating in a contest….sometimes melancholy, sometimes gay, occasionally even macabre, poems…"
