Susan Stewart teaches poetry and aesthetics at the University of Pennsylvania. She is the author of four books of poems, including the forthcoming Columbarium (University of Chicago Press, 2003), from which these two works are taken, and of numerous books of literary and art criticism, most recently Poetry and the Fate of the Senses.
