Tony
K. Stewart is a Bengali religion and literature specialist currently
Associate Professor of South Asia Religions at North Carolina State
University. He received his MA (1981) and PhD (1985) from the University
of Chicago. Recent publications include a translation of the Bengali
and Sanskrit hagiography of Caitanya titled Caitanya Caritamrta
done with Edward C. Dimock, Jr. (Harvard Oriental Series, 1999). He
is currently finishing a monograph on the beginnings of the Caitanya
cult and a volume of Bengali folk narratives from the 18-19th centuries.
Stewart serves as Director of the North Carolina Center for South
Asia Studies, an educational cooperative of North Carolina State University,
Duke University, the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and
North Carolina Central University.
